What Does the Water Pump in Your Nissan Do?
The water pump is often found near the front of the engine block, and its main job is to circulate coolant through the engine. While it’s a singular task, it accomplishes multiple functions at once. By pushing coolant into the engine and through the radiator, it regulates the temperature of the engine. In some engines, the pump is also used to drive the timing belt or chain. And in rare cases, it is designed to also lubricate the shaft and bearings. Finally, the coolant has a mechanical seal that ensures no coolant leaks out.
Can a Bad Water Pump Ruin Your Engine?
A failing water pump can lead to severe engine damage. If it’s unable to deliver enough coolant to engine parts due to leaks or clogs, then your engine could overheat. If the pump is worn to the point that it creates additional resistance to the serpentine belt, it can cause the belt to slip along the pulley.
Signs of a Failing Water Pump
An engine that overheats often is a quick sign that the water pump is failing, but it could also mean other things, such as a faulty radiator or a damaged thermostat. Along with frequent overheating, watch out for coolant leaks at the front of the engine. You can also inspect the water pump for corrosion and signs of wear.
