What are Timing Belts Made of?
Timing belts are constructed with either rubber or a synthetic rubber, such as polyurethane or highly saturated nitrile. Kevlar or fiberglass cords reinforce the structure of the belt, reducing the tendency of the belt to stretch out as it ages. The teeth of the belt are curved or are specially shaped so they connect precisely with the pulleys on the crankshaft and camshaft.

Modern engines are often designed as interference engines, which means that the cylinders and valves are all in one place. This setup allows for superior performance due to higher compression ratios, but it also means that these parts can collide with each other if the timing belt is broken.
